Engrave a handwritten recipe on a cutting board

Recipe cards are the hardest honest test of a handwriting converter: ruled lines under every word, decades of kitchen stains, a printed header, and handwriting that crosses the rules with every descender. The converter scrubs the rules while keeping the strokes that cross them, which is the detail hand-tracing tutorials spend most of their time on. The stains and the printed header go with a few strokes of the erase brush.

Getting the size right

Boards are physical, so the file must be too. Choose the width in inches before downloading, and the SVG carries that size with it: drop it into your laser software and it lands at, say, ten inches wide with no math. Engrave mode fills the strokes the way a laser expects; if your machine prefers a scored line, the single-line output follows the pen path in one stroke.

A gift with a long life

One converted recipe makes the board, and the same file makes the matching tea towel stencil, the framed print, and the card. If you want to go further, a full font of the same handwriting lets you type anything, so the keepsake is never limited to what was on the card.
